Burdock
Burdock is an invasive species that is native to Europe and was introduced in the 1700's due to its medicinal and culinary uses. Traditionally, this plant was used as a blood purifier and to treat a wide range of conditions such as sore throats, colds, and to combat hair loss.
Burdock is a biennial plant. In the first year, burdock is seen as a rosette with large, heart-shaped leaves and purple stems. In the second year, the flowering plant can reach up to 4 feet, and has clustered flowers that are purple in color at the end of the branches. After the plant dies, the bur-like seeds are able to spread. These seeds were the model for our invention of Velcro and cling to animals and humans, facilitating the spread of this plant. |
